The tune Breslau
has changed slightly from one hymn book to another changing the opening
chord to major from minor, possibly in an attempt to "lighten it
up". In any
case I felt that this tune was rather "old hat" and wanted to
create a tune of commitment to the cause while at the same time giving lots
of reassurance. Jesus' message to "take up your cross" is a
very tough one.
I wrote the
unison version of this new tune several years ago and it was sung
regularly at St Luke's, Torquay over the five years that I was there. I was surprised
and delighted on one occasion when I mentioned the hymn to a member of the
congregation who promptly sung the tune from memory! That can't be bad.
